PIERCING, PUNCHING, CUTTING AND FOLDING INTO BEAUTIFUL WORKS AND INSTALLATIONS BY DIANA BAUMBACH

These amazing and wonderful works are by Diana Baumbach, Associate Professor of Art at University of Wyoming, United States.
Her personal artistic research has focused on intersections between art, craft and everyday life.
With a background in printmaking, the objects and images she makes are informed by repetition, process and materiality. Yet printmaking now serves as a conceptual underpinning rather than an overt medium. She loves direct manipulation of materials, especially those with lasting ties to traditional craft such as paper and textiles.
She does repetitive – sometimes obsessive – processes such as piercing, punching, cutting and folding that involve a basic action which becomes automatic to the body over time.  Once she understands the simple mechanics of a process, subtle variations come to life. Using patterns allows Diana to highlight the imperfections and variations inherent in all things handmade.
After arriving in Wyoming in 2007, her work continued along the trajectory that she began in graduate school.  She drew inspiration from commonplace objects and ephemera, allowing household items such as paper towels, napkins, window coverings and furniture to drive both form and content in her work.
